One challenge here in the Phoenix real estate market is finding properties with character.
This is, by and large, a fairly new metro area dominated by tract housing. Anything built in the last 20 years likely will come in one of two architectural styles – light colored stucco or dark colored stucco. Exceptions exist here and there but, for the most part, there are limited numbers of properties that have that “it” factor, that break the mold of what we’ve come to expect … that have some character.
There are the historic districts such as Willo and Coronado (and the attendant higher prices that come from homes located in an official historic district. There are lofts located in different areas, where builders tried to artificially recreate the lofts of New York City by leaving the ceilings unfinished and the ductwork exposed.
And then there are the hidden gems which bring to mind that old bromide about judging a book by it’s cover.

This is what the loft-builders were missing … the perfect mix of the older and the new. Check out the real brick wall, not that faux stuff your parents (or maybe you yourself) had in their living rooms back in the 1970s. The exposed beams, again not speaking of artifice but intentional older design. And yet contrast those looks of yesteryear with the new cherry wood floors.
I can’t tell a lie … this is a galley kitchen. That’s just the reality of a 1,000-plus square foot townhouse built in 1980.
But with stainless steel appliances and updated cabinets, the kitchen certainly doesn’t look like a refuge from 1983.
What is it most people despise most about townhouse living? The lack of outdoor privacy. But in Casitas Lindas, that’s not an issue thanks to the attached, enclosed back yard that comes with each home …
