Happy Fourth of July

Here’s a reason I love sports – jingoism. It’s more than just okay to route for an athlete or a team because they are representing the United States, it’s almost an obligation. The Olympics bring this out. So does the World Cup, though usually the number of us sitting in our US Soccer scarves chanting our way through qualifying games (the fortunate ones in person, the rest of us courtesy of ESPN) and then the World Cup itself is limited.

Not so this year. And so to celebrate the Fourth of July, I bring you the outbreak of jingoism when Landon Donovan scored to beat Algeria. If you’ve followed the sport, and more importantly the years of apathy, you’ll appreciate the significance. (And we’ll set aside the fact most had been drinking Bloody Mary’s from 6 a.m. on.)

Be safe today, kids.
