Hey Scammers! Africa? Really?

I received this e-mail last night …

Is this property owned or still for sale? The reason I’m asking is because I got a funny email from someone that had listed this property for rent for $700-mo and a $500 deposit, all utilities included 18:: a-c. They said they were leaving for 8 yrs to Africa, him and his wife and they needed someone to care for their house. It sounds really weird. So, I’m just like I said, curious as to if this property is still on the market. If it is these people are contacting people, requesting applications w- people’s info, etc and in return giving bogess info back that’s a problem.

Needless to say, the e-mail this person received was a scam. The home in question is listed for sale (and also for rent at a higher price than this, utilities not included) and it doesn’t seem like anyone from the LLC is going to Africa anytime soon.

Not that I want to give con artists any advice but I think it’s safe to point this out without being guilty of aiding and abetting. If you’re going to be try and scam someone, you might want to come up with something other than a) going to Africa, b) being an African general or c) being a peace missionary in Africa.

While we as a collective may be frighteningly clueless (such as the person the other day who asserted to me that not all states that joined the Confederacy were in fact states where slavery was legal), most people have figured out “Africa” in this context tends to be synonymous with “crook.”

Just sayin’.
