Ice Skating and Living in Downtown Phoenix

icerinkImagine my surprise last week when, after a lunch at the Tilted Kilt in the Legends Entertainment District downtown, I happened upon an outdoor ice rink.

In Phoenix.

On a 75-degree day.

Yes, Virginia … there are holiday miracles and for the second straight year this one exists at the corner of Jefferson and Central in Phoenix – an outdoor ice skating rink at CityScape (hard by the Renaissance towers and down the block from the US Airways Center.)

This area once was a virtual downtown wasteland … there were office buildings, but little in the way of life outside the lunch rush. US Airways Center (nee America West Arena) opened, followed five years later by Chase Field (nee Bank One Ballpark) and the hints of a nightlife started to appear. Lofts started to be sold in 2004-05, just in time for the collapse of the residential market.

But now? There are stores. There are restaurants. There’s a Lucky Strike bowling alley. There are people on the streets, and not just walking to and from a game.

The Legends District (formerly Copper Square) has come to life.

And about those lofts? They’re still around too at prices unimaginable when they were first constructed.

In the interim, happy skating …
