Photo Wars, Part Five: The Beagle Strikes Back

Yes, Virginia, we’ll be winding our way back to specific real estate in the extremely near future. In the interim, I appreciate your patience during this mental walkabout.

Somebody mentioned today that they noticed the ever-present photo of Tobey and I had disappeared from the sidebar. I’d like to say there was a compelling reason but reality is I had a couple of posts where an indentation was problematic and so he disappeared.

Agent photographs in real estate are one of those conversations that seem to go endlessly in circles. Do doctors and lawyers put their pictures on their cards? Nope. But there are some companies that use a logo or something similar designed to stick in the mind of the consumer. I buy C&H Sugar not just because of the song but also because I can see the pink package from a mile away.

Tobey’s become that image for me. I suppose I could use a stylized dog at this point and get rid of my own mug – not even my wife wants to see that – but that seems more like shtick than reality. And reality became even more real when I added a photo of Tobey on the back side of my business card and you could see he aged like Abraham Lincoln from one inauguration to the next.

So what’s really the point of this and other recent posts? Mostly, I’m in the process of codifying the changes to my own business philosophy. Some of the trappings might be the same as other agents, and some may still get mileage out of the idea you shouldn’t use a dog in your marketing. But at the end of the day, this is less about marketing and more about building an identifiable business differentiated from the other 3 million real estate agents in the greater Phoenix area, give or take 2.955 million.

Tobey’s not just another beagle, and this comes from someone with three. I’m not just another agent, as my clients can attest (sometimes even without alcohol.)

It’s about time this website become reflective of that in some overtly visible ways to go with the nearly 1,800 posts explaining who I am, what I believe and what we do.
