Westgate City Center, Futbol and The Oscar

AvatarDue in part to my son’s burgeoning youth soccer career, my inability to ignore the jingoistic siren’s call that is the World Cup and the availability of both Fox Soccer Channel and GolTV on my DirecTV package, my family are that rare breed of American known as soccer fans.

Rabid? Hardly. My son’s working on developing an allegiance (we’re hopeful FC Barcelona and Ronaldinho win out over Manchester United and Chelsea) and while I’ve been known to listen to live Premiership broadcasts on the Sirius radio, I couldn’t tell you who plays goal for Newcastle if my life depended on it.

Still, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to visit University of Phoenix Stadium at the Westgate City Center to watch a futbol doubleheader: Boca Juniors vs. Alianza Lima and Cruz Azul vs. Deportiva Cali. We turned out to be one of the few unable to resist – there may have been 1,000 people in the 64,000-seat venue proving once and for all … well, that there aren’t a lot of Alianza fans in Phoenix, for starters.

Oscar Cordoba, Cali captain

Before the second game we discovered Oscar Cordoba (henceforth, “The Oscar”), the goaltender for Cali. Standing at midfield, The Oscar looked to be about 7-foot-9; it only was as he approached that he diminished in size if not bearing. Simply put, The Oscar has presence. That he is the captain of Cali is no surprise.

Oscar Cordoba, Copa Panamericana

The presence showed in the way he manned the goal. It showed in that two trainers came to the net before the game, each placing a green towel on one side of the net just so lest The Oscar not know where his towel may be. It showed when The Oscar puffed out his chest (further than normal) after making a save, almost indignant that someone dare test his reflexes.

Cali vs. Cruz Azul

As I told my wife, The Oscar is a bad mother… shut your mouth!

The games were part of the Copa Panamericana, which is making a less than spectacular debut given the first night’s attendance. Two more round-robin games are slated for Wednesday, two more for Friday and the championship game on Sunday.

Any connection to real estate is ancillary … though I can tell you there are a number of condos still available on the east side of the Westgate City Center development. If you’d like information on availability, floor plans or pricing, let me know.

Note to potential buyers: The Oscar does not convey.

Oh dear, I’m afraid if you’re going to cheer against The Red Devils the friendship is over.

When you walk through a storm
    Hold your chin up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark

At the end of the storm
    Is a golden sky
And the sweet, silver song of a lark

Liverpool’s mostly a long-standing Michael Owen fascination that turned into rooting interest even after he was gone.

I also fancy Spurs, who seem to be remarkably consistently mediocre and harmless. But there are some outside reasons that tend to hold my interest there.

To steal an old line about the Yankees, rooting for Manchester United is like rooting for US Steel. Even if the owner of my beloved Tampa Bay Bucs also owns United.
